The Baltic countries opposed the participation of Russians in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games
Representatives of the National Olympic Committees of the Baltic countries (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia) opposed the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. This was reported by Inside The Games.
It is noted that the countries sent a joint letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). “We are firmly convinced that Russians and Belarusians should not be there under any circumstances,” the appeal says.
Last December, the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia issued a call to the IOC regarding Russian athletes. The Baltic leaders felt it necessary to show the general public a technical or detailed description of the procedure that will be used to determine whether athletes meet the neutrality criteria.
On December 8, the IOC announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN). At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, or who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the Games.
