Tsitsipas’ mother Yulia Salnikova spoke about her son’s offer to play for Russia
Yulia Salnikova, the mother of Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas, said that her son was offered to play for Russia. Her words are quoted by Sport Express.
According to her, this happened at Wimbledon, at that moment Tsitsipas was 17 years old. “The tennis federation has special people who deal with this. One of them came up to us and voiced the conditions. But I already knew that the best Russian juniors did not have such conditions, and it seemed wrong to me,” she said.
Salnikova is a Soviet tennis player, a native of Moscow. In 1991, she married the Greek Apostolos Tsitsipas – Stefanos’ father – and began representing Greece.
25-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas is the winner of the 2019 ATP Finals. He also played in two Grand Slam singles finals.
