Slutskaya said that she would not condemn the change of citizenship by Russian figure skaters
Two-time world figure skating champion Irina Slutskaya, in an interview with the YouTube channel “Without Water,” assessed the change of citizenship by Russian figure skaters.
She noted that she would not condemn such athletes. “I am sure that each of them is grateful to this country. Just imagine, the athlete is at the peak, one step away from his dream. This is a painful topic, everyone must decide for themselves,” she said.
Last December, the acting president of the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR), Anton Sikharulidze, spoke out about the change of citizenship by athletes. According to him, the position on this issue will be toughened.
On March 1, 2022, the International Skating Union banned Russians and Belarusians from participating in competitions under its auspices. Due to sanctions, skaters were unable to take part in the World and European Championships, as well as in other international tournaments.
