UEFA clarifies the new format of the Champions League with the Swiss system
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has provided clarifications on the new format of the Champions League from the 2024/2025 season. This is reported on the organization’s website.
UEFA said that the tournament will use the Swiss system, according to which 36 clubs will be in the same standings. Each team will play eight matches, four home and away. The first eight clubs will automatically qualify for the playoffs, while the rest will compete for eight more spots.
The new format of the Champions League became known in May 2022. Then it was reported that 36 clubs would participate in the main stage, and the tournament itself would be held according to the Swiss system.
On February 28, 2022, UEFA suspended Russian national teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions.
