Kooij, first leader of Paris-Nice after winning the first stage

Olav Kooij (Visma-LEase a Bike) won the first stage of Paris-Nice 2024 and he put on the leader’s jersey. The Dutchman achieved the sprint victory Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was second and Laurenece Pithie (Groupama-FDJ) third.
The inaugural stage started and ended at Les Mureaux, with a route of 157.7 kilometres. As soon as we started, the cyclists jumped out of the peloton. Mathieu Birgaudeau (Total Energies), Stefan Bissegger and Jonas Rutsch (EF Education-Easypost). They had a maximum advantage of two minutes and 45 seconds over the peloton, but the main group broke the escape when there were 37.7 kilometers to go.
Afterwards, the peloton rode together, although with 18 kilometers to go before the finish line Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step), Matthew Jorgenson (VIsma-Lease a Bike), Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny) gained a few meters advantage. However, the platoon reacted quickly and absorbed the quartet. Shortly after, Evenepoel tried again, but was unable to gain an advantage over the main peloton.
In the final stretch he tried Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies). The Frenchman rode for a few kilometers at the head of the race, but was caught 2 kilometers from the finish line. In this way, the victory was decided in the sprint and in the final meters the best was Kooij.
The best Basque was Jon Barrenetxea (Movistar), who crossed the finish line in 13th position.
