Washington called the decision to put Kuznetsov in the waiver draft a new start

General manager of the National Hockey League (NHL) Washington Capitals, Brian McLellan, explained the decision to put Russian forward Evgeny Kuznetsov in the waiver draft. His words are quoted in X journalist Tariq El-Bashir.

McLellan called Kuznetsov’s departure from the team a new start for the player. “He was looking for a change of scenery, and the waiver draft could set in motion the mechanisms that would allow that to happen,” he said.

On March 2, Kuznetsov was put up for the waiver draft. On the same day, he completed the NHL Player Assistance Program, which he had begun a month earlier. The program works with hockey players suffering from psychological problems, as well as alcohol or drug addiction.

In September 2019, Kuznetsov was disqualified for using cocaine. The NHL suspended him for three games, and the International Hockey Federation suspended him from participating in international competitions and Kontinental Hockey League matches for four years.

Kuznetsov has been playing for Washington since 2014. Together with the club, he won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
