The Russian national team will perform at the home short course world championship under its own flag. This possibility was announced to Match TV by the head of the All-Russian Swimming Federation (VFP) Vladimir Salnikov.
He drew attention to the fact that the sanctions of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) expire the day before the start of the world championship, which will be held from December 17 to 22, 2022. Salnikov added that the decision was agreed with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Thus, the tournament will be the first where the Russian national team will be able to play under the tricolor.
In December last year, CAS banned Russia from flying its flag at international competitions. The measure also applies to the holding of the Olympic Games and World Championships in the country.
The punishment was eased following the sanctions imposed by WADA in December 2019. Russia was deprived of the right to host international competitions for four years, and the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) was also deprived of its compliance status due to manipulations with the database of the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory.
