Canadian Olympic champion Virtue said that Valieva was let down by the system
The most titled figure skater in the world, three-time Olympic champion in ice dancing, Tessa Virtue, in an interview with the CBC Sports YouTube channel, took pity on the Russian Kamila Valieva.
The Canadian athlete called the situation sad. “This vulnerable girl was let down by the sport system. We cannot put the burden of responsibility on a teenager,” she said. Virtue felt that everything must be done to protect young athletes.
On January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport disqualified Valieva for four years. The period of suspension starts on December 25, 2021. The athlete and her partners on the Russian national team were deprived of gold for winning the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
In March 2023, a group of 42 former Canadian Olympians called on Canada’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) to abandon its idea of supporting Russian participation in the Olympics. Virtue signed the document.
