The Netherlands entered into negotiations with the UAE on the extradition of Spartak Moscow striker Quincy Promes, convicted in absentia in Amsterdam for drug trafficking, to his homeland. This was reported by the Netherlands Broadcasting Corporation (NOS).
According to the source, the country’s prosecutor’s office has not yet confirmed whether an official request was made to the UAE authorities.
On February 29, the football player was detained at border control at Al Maktoum Airport in Dubai. The Dutchman was taken to the police station and was accompanied by red and white security officers.
On February 14, an Amsterdam court sentenced Promes in absentia to six years in prison. According to investigators, in 2019 the player was involved in transporting a large shipment of cocaine that belonged to Surinamese drug trafficker Piet Wartel. After the verdict was announced, the winger was put on the international wanted list.
