Olympic champion Akhaimova said that suspension makes Russians stronger
Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics Liliya Akhaimova spoke about the international suspension of Russian athletes. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
According to her, it is very difficult for athletes. “Whether the level has dropped or not can only be judged at international competitions. I think that Russia is one of the strongest countries, and despite what is happening, we are only becoming stronger,” she said.
On February 1, Akhaimova announced her retirement. “Gymnastics gave me not only awards, but also a great school of life,” said the 26-year-old Russian woman. Akhaimova won a gold medal as a team member at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. In the same discipline, she is a two-time silver medalist at the World Championships and European champion.
Last December, the head coach of the Russian artistic gymnastics team, Valentina Rodionenko, said that athletes would skip competitions until the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) changed the eligibility criteria for Russians. However, in her opinion, this will not happen.
