Zhurova criticized Latvia’s suspension of licenses for participants in the Games of the Future
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova appreciated Latvia’s suspension of the licenses of athletes who competed at the Games of the Future. Her words are quoted by RT.
Zhurova criticized this decision. “Unfortunately, this is a clear policy, and the question is: where, exactly, is sport here? Apparently, by Latvian standards, freedom and democracy look like this,” she said.
Earlier, two European countries – Latvia and Estonia – suspended the licenses of hockey players participating in the Games of the Future. On February 1, the Latvian Seimas adopted amendments to the Sports Law prohibiting Latvian team sports teams from competing with teams from Russia and Belarus. The ban will apply even if Russians and Belarusians perform under a neutral flag.
The Games of the Future take place in Kazan from February 21 to March 3. The international tournament features 21 innovative disciplines. They are based on a combination of physical activity, modern technology and the digital environment.
