Members of the European Parliament called on FIFA and UEFA to impose sanctions against Israel
A group of 13 members of the European Parliament called on the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to suspend Israeli clubs and national teams from competitions due to the conflict in the Gaza Strip. This is reported by Inside World Football.
The authors of the initiative wrote an open letter to the organization. “The indiscriminate killing of civilians, the blockade of humanitarian aid or the destruction of infrastructure is a crime that we cannot ignore,” said the letter, signed by MPs from Spain, Ireland, Belgium and Germany.
On February 8, 12 countries in the Middle East called on FIFA to ban Israel from international tournaments. These countries included Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.
In December 2023, the President of the Russian Football Union (RFU), Alexander Dyukov, revealed the answer of FIFA and UEFA officials to the question about the absence of sanctions against the Israeli national team. According to him, the functionaries threw up their hands.
