The head of the NHL players’ union Walsh called for the return of Russia to international tournaments
The head of the National Hockey League (NHL) players’ union, Marty Walsh, called for the Russian national team to be returned to international tournaments. His words are quoted by The Athletic.
According to him, Russian hockey players are not to blame for the situation in Ukraine. “We will resolve the issue of their play on the international stage, hopefully positively. I think the world would like to see a tournament with Russia participating. The hockey world and the world will benefit from a best-versus-best tournament involving all nations,” Walsh said.
Earlier, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin spoke out about the removal of the Russian national team from international tournaments. He hoped for a quick return of the country.
On February 13, the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) extended the suspension of the Russian and Belarus national teams. The reason was current security risks. The head of the IIHF, Luc Tardif, clarified that the issue of the participation of the Russian team in the Olympic Games will be resolved in February-March 2025.
