RFU Secretary General Mitrofanov said that UEFA does not want to let Russia go to Asia
General Secretary of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Maxim Mitrofanov revealed the position of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) on Russia’s possible transition to the Asian Confederation. His words are quoted by Sport Express.
“They told us: “We are not ready to let you go.” After some time, they unequivocally stated: “The loss of Russia is what we don’t want,” Mitrofanov said. He noted the positive attitude of UEFA head Aleksander Čeferin, who personally does not want Russia to transition.
Mitrofanov called the issue of Russia’s return to the international arena a purely political problem. The Secretary General said that football federations during negotiations do not oppose Russia’s appearance at tournaments, but after consultations with governments their position changes.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and UEFA suspended Russian national teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team has lost the opportunity to fight for access to the finals of the World and European Championships.
