Olympic champion Nagorny: the scandal with Valieva could be PR for Russia
Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics Nikita Nagorny named benefits for Russia from the doping scandal with figure skater Kamila Valieva. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
The gymnast said that such a story could be PR, and therefore affect the popularization of the sport. “People saw what happened, were not indifferent, supported the athlete on social networks and brought their children to the skating rink,” Nagorny said.
On January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years. The period of suspension starts on December 25, 2021. According to the court, Valieva could not prove that she took doping unintentionally.
Thus, the athlete was deprived of gold for winning the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing as part of the Russian team, and the Russian team moved from first place to third. In addition, Valieva was left without the title of champion of Russia and Europe.
A doping scandal surrounding the athlete unfolded at the 2022 Olympic Games. Traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found in the skater’s sample from December 2021. At the same time, CAS allowed her to participate in the individual tournament, where she took fourth place.
