World champion Evgenia Medvedeva spoke about sexualization in figure skating
Two-time world champion Evgenia Medvedeva spoke on her YouTube channel about sexualization in figure skating.
The athlete drew attention to the fact that she performs at tournaments in transparent, tight-fitting clothes. “We stand upside down in our underpants. Even some male trainers can say something like: “Have you lost weight? Your boobs have become smaller,” she said. Medvedeva considered that in figure skating it is the norm to evaluate female beauty.
In 2022, Russian figure skater Elizaveta Nugumanova complained of bullying by Evgeniy Rukavitsyn’s coaching staff. The athlete accused the specialist of insults, and the coaching staff of trying to force the skaters to remain silent about the situation within the team.
That same year, the International Skating Union reported several cases of sexual harassment in figure skating. At the same time, according to them, recently the number of cases related to ethics violations has decreased.
