San Mamés, venue of the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup finals in 2026

The stadium of San Mames will host the finals of the 2026 Champions Cup and the Challenge Cupfirst and second European rugby competitions, as it did in 2018.
Yesterday EITB advanced the dispute of the final of the top European rugby competition (Investec Champions Cup) in the Bilbao stadium and the news was confirmed this Wednesday by Athletic Club and the Bilbao City Council, who added that San Mamés will also host the EPCR Challenge Cupsecond most important competition.
Both entities also reported that the EPCR, the European association of professional rugby clubs, “received offers from 23 stadiums in 12 countries“and finally decided on the”magnificently equipped San Mamés stadium in Bilbao“.
The finals of the Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup May 2018 had a joint official attendance of 84,225 spectators in San Mamés, of which 52,282 were in the Champions League, a historical record in ‘La Catedral’, and 32,543 in the Challenge.
Furthermore, according to data provided days later by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, they generated “a direct economic impact of 28.18 million euros in Bilbao and Bizkaia and 37.6 million euros in Euskadi.”
Before these two rugby finals, San Mamés will host two other major sporting events, the 2024 Women’s Champions League final next May 25 and the final of the Europa League in 2025.
The Bilbao stadium also aspires to be one of the venues for the 2030 soccer World Cup which will be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
