On January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) disqualified Russian Kamila Valieva for four years. The period of suspension starts on December 25, 2021. According to the court, Valieva could not prove that she did not take doping intentionally. Thus, the athlete will be deprived of gold for winning the team tournament at the 2022 Olympics as part of the Russian team.
The doping scandal surrounding Valieva unfolded during the Beijing Games, when it became known that traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found in the figure skater’s sample from December 2021. Because of this, the award ceremony for the team tournament winners was postponed. At the same time, CAS allowed Valieva to participate in the individual tournament, where she took fourth place.
