USADA called the decision to disqualify Valieva correct
US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) Director General Travis Tigert reacted to the verdict of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva in a doping case. His words are quoted by USA Today.
Tiger called the decision correct and expressed hope that the “clean” athletes who participated in the Olympic Games will finally be able to experience satisfaction after a long wait for justice. He added that it was important to redistribute the medals from the team tournament at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
At the same time, the American expressed sympathy for Valieva. “Our hearts ache for another Russian athlete who has been let down by the system, and this is a young girl. The system must be corrected,” he stressed.
Earlier on January 29, CAS disqualified Valieva for four years. The period is calculated from December 25, 2021. Thus, the athlete will be deprived of gold for winning the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing as part of the Russian team.
At the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, Valieva won gold in the team tournament, but the winners – the teams of Russia, the USA and Japan – were not awarded due to the doping scandal involving her. Traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found in the skater’s sample from December 2021. At the same time, CAS allowed her to participate in the individual tournament, where she took fourth place.
