Figure skater Mishina said that monetary motivation can bring athletes down
Russian figure skater Anastasia Mishina, world and European champion paired with Alexander Gallyamov, spoke about the financial motivation of athletes. Her words are quoted by RT.
According to the skater, monetary motivation can have a negative impact and bring down an athlete if you focus on it. “It’s as if the very meaning of achieving something more, becoming better, is lost. You said about the expectation of failure, which is written on your forehead, but it seems to me that it’s the same with medals and cash prizes: as soon as you start thinking about them, you immediately lose,” said Mishina.

Gallyamov added that since childhood, coaches advised him not to think about prizes and to do his job well. “In fact, I remembered these words for the rest of my life. I still keep them in my head when I heard them when I was 10 years old,” he noted.
Mishina and Gallyamov are bronze medalists at the Beijing Olympics, world champions in 2021 and European champions in 2022. The couple also has two victories at the Russian Championship.
