Barcelona SC, the best-ranked Ecuadorian team in the Conmebol ranking

The Canaries reached the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores 2021 and beat the continent’s greats such as Boca Juniors and Santos FC.

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) unveiled this Friday the latest classification of the ranking of all teams affiliated with the organization, among which Barcelona Sporting Club stands out as the Ecuadorian team best positioned on the list. In 2021 the bullfighters, led by Argentine Fabián Bustos, reached the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores de América and during the international tournament they defeated great teams from the continent such as Boca Juniors and Santos FC; in addition to leaving on the way to Vélez Sarsfield (round of 16) and Fluminense (quarter-finals).

Barcelona is ranked 18th, although it is closely followed by Liga de Quito (20) and Independiente del Valle (21). A little further down Emelec appears, in the 28th box.

In 2021 the albos participated in the Copa Libertadores, but did not make it to the next round and ended up playing the Copa Sudamericana, where they lost to Athletico Paranaense in the quarterfinals. The Sangolquileños had a similar history and were eliminated in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana against Bragantino. The Brazilian teams that eliminated the Ecuadorians played the final of the tournament.

Despite being two-time champion of America, Palmeiras is not the one who commands the ranking, since the brand new champion of the Argentine league River Plate is the table that occupies that place. The greens are second and the podium is complemented by Boca Juniors, Flamengo and Gremio de Porto Alegre. (D)
