Hasek apologized for taking part in the opening match of the National Hockey League (NHL) between the Buffalo Sabers and the Chicago Blackhawks (3:0) on January 18. He called the incident his huge mistake.

“It is very difficult for me to justify this personal failure of mine. Now I can promise you that a similar situation will not happen again,” said the Czech.

On January 9, Hasek addressed Russian hockey players and officials. The former athlete said that no athlete from Russia can participate in international tournaments due to the events in Ukraine.
