The Olympic season for the Polish biathlon did not start well. So far, only Monika and Grzegorz Guzik scored points. In both cases, however, one cannot speak of a huge gain. Guzik was the 28th time once, and the leader of our team was in the best “40” three times, but she was at the highest 30. The results are far below expectations.
Hattrick of Polish biathletes
When a group of seniors fails, a lot of emotions for fans are provided by the younger players. In their case, one can even speak of amazing results. They started a few days ago with a spectacular victory in the IBU Junior Cup relay competition. Konrad Badacz, Hubert Matusik, Jan Guñka and Marcin Zawó³ took part in it. At the finish, the players of coach Lepel were more than a minute ahead of the German national team.
We didn’t have to wait long for the next success. On Wednesday, the first victory in his career was Jan Guñka. The Pole turned out to be the best during the individual race in Martell-val Martello. This is the first triumph of the country’s representative from the Vistula River in the IBU Cup in history. So far, Marcisz Szwajnos took the highest place, taking 7th place in the Obertilliach (17/18 season). It is noteworthy that Guñka won despite having two boxes at the shooting range. Silvano Demarmels was ahead of the second – error-free – Swiss by nearly 20 seconds.
There will be an application for a debut in the World Cup
On Friday, the juniors competed in mixed. And here again a show performed by a single white and red relay race. Patrycja Stanek and Marcin Zawó³ did a very decent job at the shooting range. In total, they needed seven additional cartridges. On the route, however, they presented themselves even better and thanks to that they signed the victory on their account.
There have not been such excellent results for Polish juniors for years. Therefore, the coach of the male youth team will apply for his best players to make their debut in the competition in January. – I will suggest to the staff coaches that in January Zawó³ and Guñka get a chance in the senior competition – said Lepel, quoted by the Polish Biathlon Association.
