South African fighter du Plessis defeated Strickland to retain his UFC title

South African mixed style (MMA) fighter Dricus du Plessis addressed the residents of South Africa in an interview with the UFC Eurasia YouTube channel after defeating American Sean Strickland at the 297th tournament of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The athlete thanked the people of the country for their support. “This is history. This is what I will say: South Africa… It is a wonderful country,” he said.

Du Plessis defeated Sean Strickland by split decision to retain the UFC middleweight title. He is the first South African to become UFC champion. Strickland won the belt in September 2023, defeating New Zealander Israel Adesanya by unanimous decision.

At the same tournament, the Russian mixed style fighter (MMA) Movsar Evloev turned out to be stronger than the British Arnold Allen. The fight took place in Toronto, Canada, in three rounds in the featherweight division and ended with the victory of the domestic athlete by unanimous decision.
