Ukrainian Tennis Federation: the handshake between Kotlyar and Mincheva is a mistake
The Ukrainian Tennis Federation called the handshake between Ukrainian Elizaveta Kotlyar and Russian Vlada Mincheva at the junior Australian Open a mistake. The sports organization’s statement was published on its Facebook page (social network banned in the Russian Federation; belongs to the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and is banned).
The federation reported that it supports the tennis players’ decision not to shake hands with Russian and Belarusian tennis players. “But there can always be mistakes, which happened today with Kotlyar,” the message says.
Her father also called Kotlyar’s action a mistake. According to him, after the match the girl did not fully control her emotions and automatically performed the ritual, forgetting whose hand she was shaking.
The meeting between Kotlyar and Mincheva took place within the first round of the junior Australian Open. The Russian won in two sets (6:2, 6:4), after the end of the match the Ukrainian and the Russian shook hands.
