Pablo Repetto returned to Uruguay to lead Nacional

Last November, Repetto had said that he was willing to manage Emelec, but not Barcelona SC. This Thursday it was presented in his country.

Pablo Repetto, who from 2012 to 2016 and from 2017 to 2021 worked in the Ecuadorian league, returned to Uruguay to become Nacional’s new coach, replacing Martín Ligüera.

The technical director signed his contract this Thursday and was presented at the Gran Parque Central, the stadium of the tricolor team, where he received the shirt of his new team from the president, José Fuentes.

Minutes later, Repetto gave a press conference in which he highlighted “the great illusion” that he has of being able to achieve all the objectives that he set for himself and also of being able to fulfill “some dream”.

When asked about the performance of his teams, Repetto replied: “I like intensity, intense teams, I think speed is very important, although you don’t just play with speed, let’s be clear.”

And he added: “When we have to make decisions with highs, we will look for players with those characteristics, which are not easy, but we will look for that so that we can get closer to what we want.”

Despite this, Repetto did not give clues about possible additions or losses in a squad that will begin working on January 5 in a place to be defined.

On the other hand, the DT spoke about the appointment of Diego Alonso as the new Uruguay coach and wished him “the best”.

“I know him, surely when I am here I will call him. Hopefully Uruguay qualify for the World Cup ”, said Repetto, who also highlighted that Óscar Washington Tabárez is“ a benchmark ”in many things.

Nacional will be the fourth team that the coach will lead in Uruguay, where he has already been through Fénix (2006-2008), Cerro (2008 and 2010) and Defensor Sporting (2010-2011).

Outside his country, Repetto directed Blooming (2009), from Bolivia; the Independiente el Valle (2012-2016), from Ecuador; al Baniyas of the United Arab Emirates (2016-2017); to Olimpia (2017), from Paraguay, and to the University Sports League of Quito (2017-2021).

In 2016, Repetto led Independiente del Valle to the final of the Copa Libertadores, in which he eliminated River Plate at Monumental and Boca Juniors at La Bombonera, before falling in the final against Atlético Nacional de Colombia. (D)
