Giorgobiani: Russian skaters are moving to Georgia because of the neighboring countries
President of the Georgian Figure Skating Federation Mariam Giorgobiani spoke about luring athletes from Russia. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Giorgobiani stated that she prioritizes looking for athletes who have any connection with Georgia to transfer. “It just turns out that we are neighboring countries with Russia and most of the suitable guys end up here,” she noted.
Currently, several former Russians compete for the Georgian team: dance duo Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin, sports couple Anastasia Metelkina and Luka Berulava, and singles skater Anastasia Gubanova. In addition, in Russia, coach Eteri Tutberidze trains singles skater Nika Egadze.
On December 25, Anastasia Gubanova was recognized as the best athlete of Georgia based on the results of 2023. The figure skater won gold at the European Championships, which became the first in history for the country.
