Canadian hockey player SKA Brendan Laipsik received Russian citizenship
Canadian forward of the St. Petersburg club of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) SKA Brendan Laipsik received a Russian passport. The corresponding decree of President Vladimir Putin was published on the legal information portal.
Laipsik’s desire to become a Russian citizen became known on July 11. SKA head coach Roman Rotenberg said that the Canadian wrote a letter to Putin.
29-year-old Leipsik joined the SKA roster in June 2023. His contract with the army team is for two seasons. The athlete has been playing in the KHL since 2020. Previously, he defended the colors of CSKA and Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
In May 2020, Lipsic found himself at the center of a scandal. In a group chat of the Washington Capitals National Hockey League club, for which the athlete played, he insulted the wives and girlfriends of his teammates. As a result, the capital team decided to part with the player.
