Pole Duda refused to shake hands with Russian Khismatullin at the World Rapid Chess Championship
Polish grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda refused to shake hands with Russian Denis Khismatullin at the World Rapid Chess Championship. TVP SPORT reported this on the X social network.
Before the start of the meeting, Khismatullin extended his hand to Duda, but he gestured that he would not return the greeting. According to the regulations, the Pole could have been disqualified for this, but the Russian did not file a protest. The match in Samarkand ended in a draw.
Earlier, Ukrainian Anna Muzychuk refused to shake hands with Russian women. Russian Valentina Gunina, who won the World Blitz Championship, said that she was not embarrassed by her opponent’s behavior, since the situation in the world was difficult.
In November, the International Chess Federation extended permission for Russian and Belarusian chess players to compete under the organization’s flag. It applies to those who already act in a neutral status and will last until January 1, 2025.
