Chess player Gunina: I’m not embarrassed by Ukrainian Muzychuk’s refusal to shake hands at the World Cup

Russian chess player Valentina Gunina appreciated Ukrainian Anna Muzychuk’s refusal to shake hands at the World Rapid and Blitz Championship (WCH), held in Samarkand. Her words are quoted by Match TV.

The athlete said that she is not embarrassed by what happened, since the situation in the world is difficult. “We all understand what can be done and what cannot be done,” she emphasized.

On December 30, Gunina won the World Women’s Blitz Championship. The Russian woman started the competition with seven wins in a row and was able to maintain her lead. In total, she has 14 points scored in 17 rounds. Gunina became the world blitz champion for the second time in her career; she won her first title in 2012.

In November, the International Chess Federation extended permission for Russian and Belarusian chess players to compete under the organization’s flag. It applies to those who already act in a neutral status and will last until January 1, 2025.
