Oleg Matytsin said that only a few athletes left Russia due to sanctions
Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin estimated the number of athletes who left the country after the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions. His words are quoted by TASS.
According to him, the hopes of unfriendly countries for a mass escape of Russians did not come true. āIām proud to say for our athletes that no one ran anywhere. Yes, some athletes really left, but these are just a few. The rest took a very correct and patriotic position,ā Matytsin noted.
He added that the Ministry of Sports has developed an anti-sanction plan. It includes creating competition in Russia by increasing the number of competitions, holding training camps and developing new competition formats.
At the end of February 2022, many sports organizations banned Russians from participating in tournaments on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee. At the same time, in some disciplines, such as tennis, boxing, MMA and chess, Russian athletes were not excluded and continued to perform in a neutral status.
