Lawyer Golovko: fencer Bida, who left for the USA, is unlikely to appear in court
Head of the Department of Criminal Procedure, Justice and Prosecutor’s Supervision, Faculty of Law, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov Leonid Golovko assessed the chances of bringing to trial Russian fencers Sergei Bida and his wife Violetta who left for the United States. His words are quoted by Moscow Speaks.
According to the lawyer, the fencers are unlikely to appear in court due to their location. “In this case, certain grounds are needed to conduct an absentee hearing, so it is quite possible that the case will be suspended,” Golovko noted.
Earlier, Elena Grishina, the mother of Sergei Bida, spoke about the circumstances of his departure to the United States. “He had permission to leave the country from the Ministry of Sports,” Grishina explained.
On December 26, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs put Sergei Bida and his wife Violetta on the wanted list for unauthorized departure to the United States. They were active officers of the Russian Guard. According to the Shot Telegram channel, they face up to ten years in prison under Article 337 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Unauthorized abandonment of a unit or place of service”).
