Dmitry Guberniev challenged the recognition of Roman Kostomarov as athlete of the year

TV presenter Dmitry Guberniev in his Telegram channel challenged the recognition of Olympic champion in ice dancing Roman Kostomarov as athlete of the year.

The journalist reposted the post of journalist Vladimir Ivanov, who called it more logical to award the ex-skater in the “Person of the Year” or “Overcoming the Year” nominations. “I completely agree with the author! Moreover, Kostomarov himself is surprised! You told me the day before! We are simply not a sports country at all. Alas. Especially today,” Guberniev wrote.

On December 21, Roman Kostomarov was named athlete of 2023 in Russia according to the results of polls by VTsIOM. He was named athlete of the year by 8 percent of Russians surveyed.

In January, Kostomarov was hospitalized with pneumonia and influenza B. Due to prolonged connection to a blood oxygenation machine and a ventilator, his tissue began to die. Doctors amputated both feet of the skater, then the shins of both legs, the entire hand of his right hand and several fingers of his left. Later, he was fitted with prosthetic legs and right arm. After this, Kostomarov continued to actively engage in sports. On December 17, he took to the ice on skates and showed a joint performance with Tatyana Navka.
