Carlsen said that eight-year-old chess player Shogjiev can be among the best
Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen assessed the prospects of eight-year-old Russian chess player Roman Shogdzhiev at the World Rapid and Blitz Championship (WCH) taking place in Samarkand. His words are quoted by NRK.
The athlete said that the Russian played at a very high level and like an adult. “It’s pretty exceptional to be such a good player when you’re eight years old. Perhaps we will see him at the top,” he thought.
On the first day, Shogjiev beat the 28-year-old representative of Uzbekistan, Jahongir Vakhidov. The next day, the Russian defeated the 25-year-old grandmaster from Norway Johan-Sebastian Christiansen.
Shogjiev ranks 130th in the standings on the second day of the competition. In October of this year, the athlete won the world championship among chess players under the age of eight.
The World Rapid and Blitz Championship is taking place in Samarkand from December 26 to 30. The total prize fund of the tournament is $600 thousand.
