Mercedes driver was overtaken by Max Verstappen in the last corner of the Abu Dhabi GP race, after the safety car came out.

A few days after having lost what would have been his eighth title of Formula 1, the British Lewis Hamilton received knighthood from the Prince of Wales during a ceremony held this Wednesday at Windsor Castle, England.

Hamilton, 36, has thus entered the New Years Honors List, a system for appointing new members to the chivalric orders, after a year in which he equaled the number of titles held by the German Michael sSchumacher and broke the record for grand prix victories (103).

The seven-time world champion let the championship slip away on Sunday in the last round of the Grand Prix held in Abu Dhabi what the dutch took away Max Verstappen for the first time on his record.

The Mercedes driver was overtaken by his Red Bull rival in the final corner of the race after the safety car came out after an accident involving the Canadian Nicholas Lafiti.

Hamilton became the fourth Formula 1 driver to be knighted, after Australia’s Jack Brabham and Britain’s Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart, and the first to receive the honor while still racing. (D)
