The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) informed that the investigations on the Uruguayan Luis Suárez are closed. The player was suspected of cheating in an exam, with the help of Juventus, in a failed transfer attempt to the Turin club last year.
“The evidence is insufficient”, argued the institution, waiting for possible additional elements that could be provided in the criminal investigation, which is still ongoing.
This Italian language test, the first step towards obtaining the country’s passport, was intended to allow Suarez to sign with the Old Lady, who had reached her maximum quota of non-European Union players at the time.
The transfer did not happen and the Uruguayan striker left Barcelona to play for Atlético de Madrid. In June, Italian prosecutors in charge of the case summoned three officials from the University of Peruggia, accused of having revealed to the player the questions that would be asked in the test. A preliminary hearing on the case is scheduled for January.
