Golovin announced his declining motivation to play for the Russian national team under sanctions

Monaco midfielder Alexander Golovin spoke in an interview with the YouTube channel of journalist Nobel Arustamyan about playing for the Russian national team under sanctions.

The footballer admitted that his motivation is falling. “No matter what you do, you won’t have the same mentality as when you play for points or to qualify. I even want to win games with Cuba, Cameroon, and Kenya. It’s clear that such teams are weaker than our level, much weaker, but you still want to win,” he added.

The Russian national team played its last friendly match on November 20 in Volgograd. Valery Karpin’s team defeated the Cuban team with a score of 8:0.

On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team lost the opportunity to compete for access to the final part of the 2022 World Cup and does not participate in the Euro 2024 qualifications.
