Athletic Club takes the game in the last minute with a header from Unai Gómez (1-0)
The young youth squad Unai Gómez gave tonight in the last play of the match against UD Las Palmas in San Mamés three points that bring the Bilbao team closer to the Champions League positions, which are just one goal difference away from Atlético from Madrid, fourth with the same points, but with one game less.
Unai Gómez finished his team’s last play with a confident header from the edge of the area, which he himself started with a steal and continued by Iñaki Williams, centering Raúl García, alone at the far post. Álvaro Valles cleared as best he could and the Bermean left-hander made a boiling San Mamés explode in his team’s final siege.
With this victory, Athletic, which has 18 points from the last 24, reaches fourth place in the table; Atlético de Madrid, who has one game less and is ahead by just one more goal.
Before that miraculous goal, achieved by the youth player with a diving header from the edge of the area, the hero of the match had been the visiting goalkeeper Álvaro Valles, who had made several goal saves and especially one to stop a penalty taken by Gorka Guruzeta in the 40th minute.
With Valverde repeating his team and García Pimienta refreshing his, partly forced by the losses of Kirian and Lodeiro, both made it clear what the match was going to be about. Las Palmas wanted possession, even without passing the field, to defend themselves, and Athletic pressed high to steal and attack.
