RFU President Alexander Dyukov said that the option to move to Asia remains
President of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Alexander Dyukov commented on the refusal to transfer to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). His words are quoted by Match TV.
Dyukov said that the option to move to Asia remains. “This option exists. We can take advantage of this opportunity, if not this year, then next year,” he noted.
The head of the RFU added that at the moment there is no guarantee of a transition from UEFA to the AFC. “The transition itself will not mean that we will automatically be able to take part in official matches,” Dyukov explained.
Earlier it became known that all members of the RFU executive committee considered it pointless to move to Asia without guarantees from the International Football Federation (FIFA). It was noted that the organization will continue to contact the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) regarding the return of Russians to tournaments.
In December 2022, the RFU executive committee created a working group to study the issue of transition from UEFA to the AFC. At the same time, FIFA announced that it would not prevent the Russian national team from participating in the qualification for the 2026 World Cup if it moves to Asia.
On February 28, 2022, FIFA and UEFA excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team lost the opportunity to compete for access to the final part of the 2022 World Cup and does not participate in the Euro 2024 qualifications.
