The Russian Football Union refused to join the Asian Confederation
The Russian Football Union (RFU) abandoned the idea of moving to the Asian Confederation. Sport Express reports this.
All members of the organization’s executive committee considered the transition pointless without guarantees from the International Football Federation (FIFA). It is noted that the RFU will continue to contact the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) regarding the return of Russians to tournaments.
In December 2022, the RFU executive committee created a working group to study the issue of transition from UEFA to the Asian Confederation. At the same time, FIFA announced that it would not prevent the Russian national team from participating in the qualification for the 2026 World Cup if it moves to Asia.
On February 28, 2022, FIFA and UEFA excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team lost the opportunity to compete for access to the final part of the 2022 World Cup and does not participate in the Euro 2024 qualifications.
