Figure skater Roman Kostomarov regretted agreeing to amputation
Russian figure skater Roman Kostomarov regrets agreeing to amputation of limbs. The athlete stated this in a program on one of the federal channels; his words are quoted by Channel Five.
As Kostomarov admitted, agreeing to the operation, he was afraid of the outcome of Yulia Nachalova, who refused to amputate her toe.
“Then, after some time, I, of course, regretted it. I didn’t want to be disabled, to live as a disabled person, especially like this. At least they would leave their hands,” said the skater.
On December 11, Kostomarov performed his first training session wearing prosthetics at the skating rink, and on December 17, he performed on the ice as part of Ilya Averbukh’s show.
Kostomarov was hospitalized on January 10 with pneumonia and influenza B. Due to prolonged connection to a blood oxygenation machine and a ventilator, his tissue began to die. Doctors amputated both feet of the skater, then the shins of both legs, the entire hand of his right hand and several fingers of his left. Later, he was fitted with prosthetic legs and right arm.
