The Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito, crowned last Sunday as champions of the 2023 Pro League tournament, extended its lead at the top of the Ecuadorian club classification with more awards achieved in the country’s first league competitions than international trophies in their display cases, remaining only on first place in the historical table.

The victory on penalties (3-0) in the final return against Independiente del Valle (0-0 in the first leg, 1-1 in the crucial match), not only cemented the Liga de Quito at the top among the collectors of stars in Ecuador, but also gave Pichincha Non-Amateur Football Association (AFNA) supremacy in the race it has held since 1977 with Guayas, the second power of Ecuadorian football, in terms of national tournaments won by its representatives: 32 against 31.

Not everything started in 1957

Soccer in Ecuador has not been played since 1957, with the inaugural edition of the national competition. Professionalism was even established in this sport before the start of the aforementioned competition, with the Guayas Football Association as the pioneering entity. In 1951, the first rented tournament was held, with the crowning of RĆo Guayas. Pichincha emulated Guayas starting in 1954 to end the amateur era in that province.

Ecuadorian amateurism was also divided into categories, one major and one minor; with promotions and relegations. And on that track, the Quito league ran its first Olympic round 91 years ago. With the recent establishment of the Ecuadorian Cup and the Supercup, the Albos have increased their list of honors to include one from the first division B.

These are the 31 Quito league titles won in official championships (first league and also international):
