Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics Angelina Melnikova appreciated her own desire to compete at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. The words of the Russian woman are quoted by Sport Express.
“That’s a very difficult question. As an athlete, I want to go to the Olympics. But as a citizen of Russia, probably not,” said the athlete.
At the same time, Melnikova expressed hope that the Russian Artistic Gymnastics Federation will decide to send athletes to the Olympics. “I’m sad at the thought that I won’t be able to go to Paris. Still, I hope that sport is outside of politics,” she emphasized.
On December 10, the head coach of the Russian artistic gymnastics team, Valentina Rodionenko, said that gymnasts will miss competitions until the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) changes the eligibility criteria for Russians. However, in her opinion, this will not happen.
On December 8, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. Six Russians and five Belarusians have currently qualified for the Games.
