Minister Jakstas will discuss the exclusion of athletes from Russia from competitions in Lithuania
Lithuanian Minister of Education, Science and Sports Gintautas Jakstas will hold a meeting to discuss ways to exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus from international competitions. Baltnews writes about this.
“The minister invited representatives of Lithuanian sports federations and organizations to discuss existing ways to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international sports competitions,” said Nomeda Barauskienė, head of the ministry’s communications department.
On December 8, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. Six Russians and five Belarusians have currently qualified for the Games.
At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine and have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not get to Paris. Representatives of team sports will also miss the tournament.
The presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia said that Russian athletes should not participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda called the IOC decision disappointing and expressed hope that it could be reconsidered. The head of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevich, allowed a boycott of the Games if the IOC does not change its position on this issue.
