The head of the Cycling Federation Ekimov argued with Wiener, who announced a boycott of the Olympic Games
The President of the Russian Cycling Federation (FVSR) Vyacheslav Ekimov appreciated the words of the head of the Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation (RFGR) Irina Viner, who announced the refusal of her athletes to perform at international tournaments in a neutral status. Sport Express reports this.
The functionary argued with the president of the FHGR. “If anything depended on me, I would say that we have to go. Even our president said that our athletes are known with and without the flag. For an athlete, the Olympic Games are a milestone in life, which involves self-denial for the sake of professional results,” said Ekimov.
He also cited the dangerous consequences of not going to Paris. “We can say that we are not going and boycotting, but then we will lose the motivation of the athletes. What incentives are there to support it?” – Ekimov noted.
Wiener announced the refusal of Russian gymnasts to participate in international tournaments in a neutral status earlier on December 18. She also called the possible performance of Russian athletes at the 2024 Games without a flag and anthem a disgrace.
On December 8, the International Olympic Committee announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. Six Russians and five Belarusians have currently qualified for the Games.
