Samaranch called the admission of Russians to the Olympic Games a painful but fair balance
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) again spoke out about the admission of Russians to the 2024 Olympic Games. The commentary of the vice-president of the organization, Juan Antonio Samaranch, is provided by Inside The Games.
Samaranch called allowing Russians a painful but fair balance. “It remains to be seen how many of them will qualify and how it will all end. We have managed in a very polarized world to comply with the Olympic Charter, but we must recognize that we live in a real and very complex world,” he added.
On December 8, the IOC announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. Six Russians and five Belarusians have currently qualified for the Games.
At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine and have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not get to Paris. Representatives of team sports will also miss the tournament.
