The last three years of Argentine-Ecuadorian Carlos Alfaro Moreno’s management as president of Barcelona Sporting Club have been marked by verbal exchanges with Esteban Paz, director of Liga de Quito.
This time it was Paz who initiated the conflict: “How different are the leaders of Quito and Guayaquil. We are different and we say things with respect. “I have never spoken to the coach other than to say hello, nor to the FEF leaders, but I have not told any of them to put such a player in the first team,” commented Paz.
Aquiles Álvarez: If I have to take Esteban Paz’s hand, I’ll take it out without a problem
He also noted: “I don’t agree with the views of the Barcelona managers who go out and shout in the media about why they don’t call up a top player or such a player from the training squad. “They apply pressure as if that’s the way sports leadership is done.”
Hours after Antonio Alvarez took over as Barcelona president for the next four seasons, Alfaro Moreno told Paz: “The reality is that if I decide to retire, some managers, including Esteban Paz, will celebrate the end of the year with a smile. That’s clear to me.”
A historic triumph! Barcelona SC beat Liga de Quito 1-0 to end Alba’s unbeaten run at Rodrigo Paz Delgado Stadium in the Pro League
The Argentinian-Ecuador noted that the Quito native was “in the way” as during his tenure with the bullfighting team he managed to return to the Olympics as national champions at Rodrigo Paz Stadium in 2020 (the first from a visiting team in history) and finished with an unbeaten 25 years, 6 months and 10 days (9,323 days) since U fortress opened its doors.
“I don’t expect them to love me after all that,” he said on the radio. Caravan Alfaro Moreno, with whom Barcelona reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores 2021.
The start of a fight
It all started in November 2020 when Aquiles Alvarez, who was then the sports vice president, questioned the work of referee Luis Quiroz for sending off Emelec defender Bryan Carabali in a match against Liga de Quito at Rodrigo Paz Stadium. The Blues ended up turning the score from 1-0 to 1-2.
“I didn’t want to get into this, but the topic is really unpleasant. It’s time to expose them. This is the data. Not opinions, purely. The shortlist changes between roosters and midnight and more. What a pity! Here we are. What we saw and are seeing is not normal,” Alvarez posted on his X account (formerly Twitter).
And Paza’s response was, “I won’t let anyone try to denigrate her by opening their big mouths or saying anything on Twitter.”
But the problem didn’t stop there because in January 2021, Alvarez said: “If he insults me after my tweets and tells me I’m a clown and a hypocrite, we’re already entering a different field. I am respectful. If I see him, I won’t put up with him, and if I have to take my hand out, I’ll take it out without a problem.” (D)
