UFC fighter Benoit Saint-Denis accused Nurmagomedov and Makhachev of doping
French UFC fighter Benoit Saint-Denis accused the Nurmagomedov family of doping. His words are quoted by Le Figaro.
“I have no doubt: they are doped like mules. They use it smartly,” said the athlete. He drew attention to the fact that lightweight champion Islam Makhachev was caught using meldonium in 2016. The foreigner emphasized that the entire Russian federation was sanctioned and suspended from participating in the 2016 Olympic Games because of this banned substance.
On October 21, Makhachev defended his UFC lightweight title for the second time. The Russian athlete knocked out Australian Alexander Volkanovski in the first round. In total, the 32-year-old Russian had 26 fights in his career, in which he won 25 victories, losing only once. He tops the UFC rankings regardless of weight categories.
Meldonium, widely used by Russian athletes, was included in the list of drugs banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency on January 1, 2016. At the beginning of the same year, a number of domestic athletes, including tennis player Maria Sharapova, received disqualifications after failed doping tests that showed the presence of this substance in the body.
