Follow the Money: 28 clubs that violated anti-Russian sanctions may be punished
28 European football clubs may have problems due to violation of anti-Russian sanctions introduced after the start of the special operation in Ukraine. Follow the Money learned about this.
Journalists calculated that since the end of February 2022, clubs from the EU have made 17 transfers for money with Russian teams. Ten of them involved Russian clubs subject to European sanctions. Another 13 players left European clubs for teams associated with European or US sanctions.
Among the clubs that can be punished are the French Lyon and Nice, the Spanish Real Sociedad, the Italian Torino and Udinese, as well as the Dutch PSV and NEC.
In September last year, it became known that the transfer of Russian national team midfielder Arsen Zakharyan to London Chelsea had been disrupted. It was clarified that the transition would not take place due to sanctions imposed by the UK against Russia. A year later, the midfielder moved to the Spanish Real Sociedad.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team has lost the opportunity to fight for access to the finals of major tournaments.
