The Turkish championship was suspended after the beating of referee Meler in a Super League match
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended the national championship after an incident in the match of the 15th round of the Super League between Ankaragucu and Rizespor (1:1). This is reported on the organization’s website.
On December 11, after the game ended, Ankaragucu President Faruk Koca ran onto the field and hit referee Halil Umut Meler in the face. The referee fell on the lawn and received several more blows from people who ran up. After this he was hospitalized.
“This inhumane and heinous attack was carried out against everyone involved in Turkish football. The culprits will be punished in the most severe manner. By decision of the TFF Board of Directors, matches in all leagues have been postponed indefinitely,” the federation said in a statement.
After 15 rounds, the leadership in the Turkish championship is shared by Fenerbahce and Galatasaray. The teams have 40 points each.
